How Dark Can You Go: Understanding Auto Window Tint Percentages

Automotive window tint can get as dark as allowed by the state where your vehicle is registered. The reason most states have limits is so that law enforcement can safely see inside a vehicle when it’s in traffic or pulled over. It’s also for your own safety so that you can see the road and surroundings clearly, especially at night or during low visibility weather conditions.

The tint’s darkness level is measured as a visible light transmission percentage, or VLT%. This percentage refers to the amount of light allowed through the window. The lower this number, the darker the tint. A VLT of 20% means that the window tint is allowing only 20% of light to pass through the glass, which makes for a very dark window. A tint of 50% VLT is common in many states and allows half of light to pass through the window.

In Massachusetts, the current legal VLT for the front side windows, back side windows, and the rear window for sedans, SUVs, and vans is 35%. You can view the legal limits for your state here.

Auto Window Tint FAQs

‍The amount of time varies, depending on your type of vehicle. A complete car can take 1 to 2 days. If old aftermarket film has to be removed, that can add anywhere from an extra day or two.

It varies from state to state. We recommend that you check with your local legislation on the tint darkness that is legally allowed. For the State of Massachusetts, the lowest legal percentage is 35% VLT on side windows and rear windshield. We do not tint front windshields.

Yes. XPEL Prime window tint blocks harmful UV rays from the sun. This can protect your skin and your car’s interior from damage caused by the sun’s rays.

Safeguard Your Windshield and Improve Driving Visibility With Our Glass Coatings

Your vehicle’s windshield is susceptible to pebbles, rocks, and other flying road debris that can create chips or cracks in the glass, putting you and your passengers at risk and leading to repair costs. Automotive Elegance can protect your windshield and improve visibility with our glass coating applications.

XPEL Fusion Plus ceramic coating helps strengthen windshields and vehicle windows by bonding with the silica and filling in microscopic grooves and pits that can’t be seen with the naked eye.

These glass coatings not only make a windshield and a vehicle’s windows stronger, but helps them repel rain, snow, ice, dirt, and insects. Cleaning the windshield is much easier with a glass coating applied, as water runs right off.

They also help windshields resist scratches and improve a driver’s visibility in rain and snow and at night while reducing glare.
